Remember hearing about Roger Clemens' son Koby? Well, he's making a name for himself in the minors.

Yesterday, new Red Sox outfielder Joey Gathright said he envisioned himself playing the same role Dave Roberts occupied for the Red Sox in 2004. Today, Gathright and Roberts chatted for several minutes after Roberts stopped by his locker. Roberts’s message: "Just really embrace this," Roberts recalled after their talk. "It’s just a great team and a great organization to be a part of." In Tampa Bay to broadcast tonight’s game on NESN, Roberts wanted to meet Gathright, who he had never been introduced to during his playing days. Gathright mostly listening, nodding as Roberts spoke. "I always admired his ability seeing him play," Roberts said. "He has unlimited ability."

The new Dave Roberts meets Dave Roberts - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog Seriously, calling Gathright the "new Dave Roberts" is not the smartest idea in my mind. Sure, he's fast, but geez, can you guarantee me he'll steal a base against Mariano Rivera in the postseason? With Bill Mueller batting?!

The Red Sox plan to have Paul Byrd make his second Red Sox start of 2009 on Friday, in the first game of a four-contest set against the White Sox in Chicago. Byrd will be followed in the rotation by Junichi Tazawa (who was called up on Tuesday after being temporarily deployed to the Rookie Level Gulf Coast League over the weekend) will take the ball on Saturday.

Rotation updates: Byrd to start Friday, Tazawa on Saturday for Sox Well, Taz is back. That didn't take too long.

In their first wave of September call-ups, the Red Sox have added catcher George Kottaras, outfielder Brian Anderson, pitcher Junichi Tazawa, outfielder Joey Gathright, and infielder Chris Woodward. All but Gathright, whom the Sox acquired Saturday in a minor league trade with Baltimore, have previously played for the Sox this year. Gathright, one of the fastest men in baseball, could serve as a pinch-running specialist. The Sox will likely add more players as the minor league season ends in a week. All five players will be in uniform for tonight’s game at Tampa Bay.

Call-ups made official - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog Kott is back! And so is Anderson, Tazawa and Woodward. Joey Gathright is a new addition. I'd also like to see Hunter Jones come back once Pawtucket's season is over.

The Red Sox today recalled righthanded pitcher Marcus McBeth from Pawtucket and optioned righthanded pitcher Junichi Tazawa to the Rookie-Level Gulf Coast League Red Sox. McBeth, 29, had a stint with the Red Sox earlier this season, July 31 through Aug. 1, though he did not appear in a game. He is 2-2 with three saves and a 2.70 ERA in 42 games (one start) for the PawSox this year.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is tentatively scheduled to start for the Red Sox on September 9 at home against the Orioles. The Red Sox pushed his next rehab start back one day in order to line him up. Dice-K struck out four batters over three innings Monday in a rehab start in the Gulf Coast League. He'll make two more rehab appearances.
