Trevor Story’s mere existence should go a long way towards improving what was one of the worst defenses any of us have ever seen last season. But that’s not all he’s doing to try to make the Red Sox catch the ball better. He invited a group of infielders — Triston Casas, Vaughn Grissom, Nick Yorke, and David Hamilton — to his house in Texas for a mini offseason training camp. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)

Meanwhile, the more official rookie development camp starts today at Fenway. Grissom and Yorke will both be attending this one as well, along with Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel, and others. (Chad Jennings, The Athletic)

Will Vladimir Asencio make it to the rookie development camp in a few years? The signing period for international amateur free agents has begun, and Asencio, an athletic 17-year-old outfielder out of the Dominican Republic, is the most highly touted player the Sox have signed so far. (Rob Bradford, WEEI)

Getting back to regular free agency, James Paxton remains on the market. It appears unlikely that he returns to Boston, though we may still end up seeing a good deal of him next year, as it’s rumored that the Orioles are interested in signing the Canadian lefty. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)

Will Nick PIvetta take Paxton’s place in the rotation? Barring some unexpected moves, it’s looking like one of the final two spots is his. What can the Sox expect out of Pivetta this year? (Mac Cerullo, Boston Herald)
