Are you eager for the Red Sox to make their first free agent pitching signing of the offseason? What if I told you that pitcher might be. . . James Paxton! According to reports, the front office has been in frequent and consistent communication with Paxton since the end of the season. No deal is imminent, and it’s unlikely that Paxton would sign before bigger names like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery come off the board, but it looks like we shouldn’t be too surprised if we end up seeing him in Fort Myers in six weeks. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)

The Paxton reports come amidst other rumors that, after losing out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Sox may not be all that interested in pursuing either Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery, at least at the prices those arms are expected to fetch. Industry sources say the Sox are being more active in the next tier of free agents, your Shota Imanagas and Lucas Gioliti. (Alex Speier, Boston Globe)

On the offensive side of things, the Sox are apparently interested in outfielder Teoscar Hernandez. The Hernandez interest is curious in the sense that the Red Sox have already added Tyler O’Neil to a crowded outfield, and suggests that a trade could be in the works. (Connor Roche, Boston.com)

Of course we won’t see any of these guys in Fenway any time soon, because the ballpark is currently in college football mode. Here’s how groundskeeper David Mellor and his team are transforming the ballpark ahead of tomorrow’s Wasabi Bowl between Boston College and Southern Methodist. (Wow, those words make no sense. Seriously, what even is college football?) (Tim Crowley, NESN)
