Boston Offense Backs Up Hill to Win Third Straight

August 17

Contreras pitches for Pittsburgh against Hill. In contrast to last night, the Pirates get on the board almost immediately. After a single to open up the first, Bryan Reynolds homers to the bullpen in center to make it 2-0. It is his eighteenth of the year.

The first two batters reach for the Sox in the top of the second. With one out, Arroyo doubles on a line drive to right-center and ties the game at 2-2 as Verdugo and Martinez score. McGuire singles to left to put runners at the corners for Hernández, who keeps the line moving with a single to right that scores Arroyo as Boston goes ahead 3-2. Hernández moves up to second because of a wild pitch on the next pitch, putting two men in scoring position and eliminating the double play opportunity. Devers is intentionally walked to load the bases with two out, but a strikeout ends the inning and keeps the game close. With a runner at first and one out in the top of the fifth, Verdugo doubles down the right-field line to score Bogaerts and make it 4-2. He ends up stranded. Hill, meanwhile, hardly misses a beat after the home run, retiring 12 straight after the home run. The Sox load the bases with one out in the top of the eighth, and Refsnyder walks in Verdugo to make it 5-2. That is followed by two quick outs to minimize the damage. Devers shows signs of busting out of his slump for the month with a leadoff double to the gap in left-center in the ninth. A four-pitch walk to Verdugo puts two on with one out, and a walk to Martinez immediately thereafter, his third tonight, loads the bases again. After a force out at the plate, Arroyo singles to left off the glove of Padlo at third to score Verdugo and make it 6-2 as the Sox effectively put it away, but they’re not done. Martinez and Hosmer score on a Plawiecki single to right to make it 8-2 before a strikeout ends the inning.

With a runner at first and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Chavis doubles to right-center to put two men in scoring position, and then Reynolds scores on a single to make it 8-3. A groundout puts both men in scoring position with two out before a strikeout ends it.
