Vázquez Homer Crucial in Power-Fest

June 21

Hill pitches for the Sox against Brieske. One out into the game, Báez triples to deep center right before scoring on Cabrera’s single up the middle that puts the Tigers up 1-0. Back-to-back hits start the inning, and the Red Sox have runners at the corners. Duran scores to tie the game on Martinez’s sacrifice fly to make it 1-1. Brieske throws 27 pitches in the frame. Báez hits a two-out homer into the bullpen in right in the top of the third to give Detroit the lead back at 2-1. This is his fifth of the year.

The Sox put two on with one out in the bottom of the fourth for Story, who drives his eleventh of the year onto Lansdowne behind the Monster, and it’s a 4-2 Red Sox lead. After a strikeout, Vázquez doubles off the Monster, but a fly out ends the inning. The Tigers put runners at the corners with two out in the top of the fifth for Haase, who singles to left to score Grossman and make it 4-3. A strikeout leaves the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Story makes a lunging grab to keep a line drive from going into the outfield, ending the seventh in the process. Vázquez slams a homer into the Monster to lead off the bottom of the inning and make it 5-3. It is his fourth of the year and fiftieth of his career. However, the Tigers have no intention of going down easily. Schoop leads off the top of the ninth with his sixth home run of the year, this one into the Monster, to make it 5-4. The bullpen just barely holds it together, and the Red Sox are guaranteed a series win.
