TORONTO’S CRUCIAL ERROR, WONG’S SAC FLY KEY TO BOSTON WIN

April 19

Eovaldi pitches for the Sox against Kikuchi as the Sox see Toronto for the first time. The temperature at the outset is 47 degrees, and the announcers say that it could get as low as 39 degrees by the time this one’s over. Toronto takes a 1-0 lead on Collins’ leadoff homer to right in the top of the second. It’s his second of the year. Verdugo scoops a potential hit off the grass in left to end the inning. A runner is at second with one out in the bottom of the second, but he is stranded. The Jays put two on with one out in the top of the third before Eovaldi gets out of the jam. With one out in the bottom of the frame, Hernández picks up Boston’s first hit of the game: a double to left. Immediately thereafter, Story hits a double to left of his own to bring him in and tie it at 1-1. He moves to third on a groundout before another groundout ends the inning.

The first two batters reach in the top of the fourth, but Eovaldi works around that and concedes nothing. Dalbec leads off the bottom of the seventh by getting to second on an error on a botched groundout. He moves to third on a groundout and scores on Wong’s sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. The Sox take the lead in the inning despite not getting a hit. Despite getting outhit 8-3, the Sox eke out a 2–1 win.
