Montgomery starts for the Yankees against Houck in the finale. The Sox put runners at first and second with one out in the top of the first when Montgomery takes a line drive off the knee and lower half of his left leg (he’s left-handed pitcher, so that’s his plant leg). Somehow, he stays in the game, but something may tell the Yankees they should have taken him out. Martinez almost immediately doubles to left to give Boston a 1-0 lead when Devers scores. Dalbec is hit in the foot to load the bases before Arroyo’s sacrifice fly scores Bogaerts and makes it 2-0. A groundout ends the inning. The Yankees counter by putting runners at the corners with one out against Houck. After Judge takes second on defensive indifference and a walk loads the bases with two out, a fly out ends the inning as Houck gets out of it with no damage, just 31 pitches thrown, but that’s now the hardest he has had to work in any inning; his previous high was 29.
A runner is at second with two out in the bottom of the second after a wild pitch, but a strikeout ends the inning. The first two batters reach in the bottom of the third before Stanton hits a single into left and plates Rizzo to make it 2-1. A walk loads the bases, but a double play preserves the lead. The first two batters reach in the top of the fourth and a groundout moves them into scoring position, prompting Aaron Boone to make a pitching change. Araúz hits a sacrifice fly to score Arroyo and make it 3-1. A strikeout ends the inning, much to Hernández’s dismay. Kiner-Falefa leads off the bottom of the inning with a double to left-center, followed by a single that puts two on, and Houck is pulled one out later in favor of Ryan Brasier. A wild pitch moves both into scoring position for Rizzo, who singles to center to score the runners and tie it at 3-3. Once again, the Sox have lost the lead. With a runner at first and one out in the bottom of the fifth, Torres doubles to right-center to put two in scoring position, but Crawford works around that to end the inning. Dalbec gets the lead back with a leadoff homer to right in the top of the sixth to make it 4-3. It’s his first of the year. Arroyo robs Torres of a hit with a sliding catch in right-center for the second out of the bottom of the seventh. Diekman strikes out the side in the ninth as the Red Sox avoid a sweep by picking up a 4-3 win before they head to Detroit.
