Monday was about as embarrassing as it gets for a major-league team, with the team collapsing after an early 7-1 lead in large part due to horrific defense. Chris Sale spoke about the loss. (Christopher Smith; Masslive)

Despite the loss to open up their three-game set against the Rays, the Red Sox are still in a good position to play in a one-game playoff, though obviously it is not a sure thing. If they do make it, the defense is a concern. (Dan Shaughnessy; Boston Globe)

Everything is a mess right now, and even when they were winning it was with a lot of players coming in and out of the roster. This is one of those times when Alex Cora needs to make the right moves at the right time. (Rob Bradford; WEEI)

For some good news, the Red Sox are expecting to get Kiké Hernández and Danny Santana back from the COVID list on Tuesday. (Lauren Campbell; NESN)

More positives: Two of the players on the MiLB Players of the Week team come from Boston’s organization. (Sam Dykstra; MLB.com)
