Red Sox vs. Yankees Lineups: Third time’s the charm

If the Red Sox and Yankees finish the season with identical records, the Red Sox own the tiebreaker, having already won the season series, and would host the Wildcard Game at Fenway Park. The Red Sox look to go back into first wildcard position behind Eduardo Rodriguez, with Jordan Montgomery going for New York. (7:08 p.m. EST, ESPN)

The last few meetings with the Yankees have not gone the way of the Red Sox. The last two games, in particular, were awful showings from the Red Sox as a whole. Nate Eovaldi had an abysmal start on Friday, giving up seven earned runs in 2 ²⁄₃ innings. The offense did not show up against Gerrit Cole.

Saturday was an absolute heartbreaker. The Red Sox held the lead going into the eight inning, when Alex Cora made the decision to bring in Darwinzon Hernandez to face Anthony Rizzo. Tanner Houck began the eight inning having struck out both Rougned Odor, and Gio Urshela, but lost command of the zone and walked both Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge. Rizzo was hit by a pitch from Hernandez pitch, and Giancarlo blasted a grand slam. Game over. Red Sox lose.

The past is in the past, and the Red Sox can still be in a strong position to take the top wildcard spot if they can win on Sunday behind Rodriguez. They’ll have Kyle Schwarber on the bench for this one, with Alex Verdugo in left. Christian Arroyo also gets the start with José Iglesias on the bench.
