Welcome back to another episode of The Over the Monster Podcast, your spot for the latest in Red Sox baseball. As is always the case, but is extra relevant today, this episode was recorded prior to Tuesday’s game against the Rays, which means we knew nothing of the loss, and more importantly we knew nothing of the Xander Bogaerts positive COVID test.
What we did know was that the Red Sox were coming off a series-opening loss in Tampa Bay but were still hanging on with solid playoff odds. We took a look at those odds as well as what FanGraphs projects the team will need to make the postseason. We then take a look at the schedule and determine if that win total is reasonably in reach.
From there, we move on to a few other happenings around the roster. We spend some time talking about the COVID outbreak, specifically with its impact on the bullpen. That moves into a discussion about the decision to schedule a bullpen day on Tuesday rather than start Chris Sale on regular rest. From there we talk about the polar opposite play of Jarren Duran and Bobby Dalbec of late and what, if any, impact those performances will have on their roles in 2022. Finally, we answer a few listener questions.
