We are back for Episode 22 of the Red Sox On Deck Podcast, your go-to source for everything prospects on the Over the Monster Podcast Network. On this episode, after three weeks of draft previews and reviews, Shelly and Bob get back to level by level reviews from the month of July.
First, there were quite a few news and notes items to get to. After a general MLB trade deadlines review, we discussed the major local deal as the Red Sox shipped out right-handed pitcher Aldo Ramirez to Washington in return for OF Kyle Schwarber. Additionally, we bid adieu to Alex Scherff and former top prospect Michael Chavis in separate trades. In other news, second round pick Jud Fabian did not sign and will head back to Florida, but the Red Sox did sign 16 of their 20 draft picks including fifth rounder Nathan Hickey and 11th rounder Niko Kavadas in the final days before the deadline.
Meanwhile, Marcus Wilson was DFA’d and eventually claimed by Seattle. Chris Sale has one more tune up start in Worcester but Tate Matheny stole the show with a spectacular catch in Sale’s second-to-last start. Blaze Jordan and Tyler McDonough are quickly heading to Low-A, and Chris Murphy has been promoted to Double-A. Triston Casas and Johan Mieses are making their presence felt at The Olympics as well.
Shelly and Bob then each picked a player to highlight at each of the six levels based on their performance in the past 30 days. Starting in Rookie Ball, we discussed Blaze Jordan and Wilkelman Gonzalez in the Florida Complex League, followed by Johnfrank Salazar and Francis Hernandez in the Dominican Summer League. At A-Ball, we discussed Gilberto Jimenez and Shane Drohan in Salem, along with Christian Koss and Tyler Dearden in Greenville. Shoutout to Joe Davis, of course, for a hot start post-Greenville-promotion, and Shelly’s hoping to track down a Davis “shirsey”. At Double-A Portland, we discussed Pedro Castellanos and Kutter Crawford’s July before his promotion to Worcester. In Worcester, Jeter Downs and Yairo Munoz were chronicled.
