We are back for Episode 21 of the Red Sox On Deck Podcast, your go-to source for everything prospects on the Over the Monster Podcast Network. On this episode, Shelly and Bob were joined by Ian Cundall of the illustrious Sox Prospects. Please give Ian a follow @iancundall on Twitter!
The group opened the show discussing this year’s draft, starting with Marcelo Mayer. Ian reviewed his expectations going into Draft Day, the shock of Mayer falling to pick number four, the difficulties in scouting during a pandemic year, as well as where he may rank in their August prospect rankings at the site. Jud Fabian is still unsigned and it is not looking good at the moment. While the Red Sox would get pick #41 in next year’s draft as compensation, should they have seen this coming going into day two of the draft? And what salary number can they get to within the slot system?
After some late round pick discussion, and some Chris Sale and Connor Seabold updates, Shelly, Bob, and Ian discussed two of their favorite Red Sox players at length, Jarren Duran and Garrett Whitlock. How can Duran contribute with the big league team even if his bat isn’t quite there in 2021? Might the Red Sox consider Whitlock a rotation piece in 2022?
The remainder of the show, we discussed as many prospects as time would allow. That included Triston Casas, Jeter Downs, Gilberto Jimenez, Brayan Bello, Jay Groome, Josh Winckowski, Jeremy Wu-Yelland, Brainer Bonaci, and more!
