We are back for Episode 20 of the Red Sox On Deck Podcast, your go-to source for everything prospects on the Over the Monster Podcast Network. On this episode, Shelly and Bob were prepared to talk draft only but were hijacked by the news of Jarren Duran’s call-up for this weekend at Yankee Stadium. What are our thoughts on the timing and location of the call-up, and who might lose playing time as a result? We remind everyone of the batted ball results from his swing change, as well as discuss a recent Athletic article where Worcester hitting coach Rich Gedman gushed over the “motor” of Duran and where he gets his motivation from.
Shelly and Bob then took a look back at Sunday’s opening round of the draft and what led to Chula Vista, California high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer falling to the Red Sox at pick number four. They review his skill set, expectations, and how his “slot” may have affected the rest of the Sox draft. A similar surprise happened in round two where Florida outfielder Jud Fabian fell to Boston at pick number 40. His swing-and-miss flaw is worth the risk in round two for the upside both offensively and defensively in center field. They reviewed the remaining 18 rounds highlighting their favorite picks, including another Florida pick in the fifth round, Nathan Hickey, and the intriguing power upside of 11th rounder Niko Kavadas from Notre Dame.
Don’t skip out on the news and notes section, featuring a Chris Sale rehab start, a Connor Seabold rehab start, Shelly’s gripes with the Futures Game broadcast, and quite a few promotions including catcher Jaxx Groshans and pitcher Jose Adames to Worcester.
