The Red Sox had things fall just about as well as anyone could have possibly lined up for them in the draft. Picking at number four, it seemed like the only player in the top tier of the class who was not going to be available was high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer. Every mock out there had him going at the very top of the draft to the Pirates, with things being able to go in a number of different directions from there.
Instead, Mayer was not taken first. Instead, Pittsburgh grabbed Henry Davis, who most mocks had going to Boston. The Rangers and Tigers, picking at two and three respectively, stuck with what most mocks had, with Jack Leiter going to Texas and Jackson Jobe going to Detroit. That gave the Red Sox a surprising choice of high school shortstops, and they took the top player on most boards.
So, it seems like a formality, but it’s worth throwing out there. On a scale of 1-5, where one is terrible and five is amazing, how are you feeling about how things shook out?
