The Red Sox had won two in a row before Saturday’s game, and were looking to really start to bury Toronto in the divisional race. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan. The Blue Jays offense was able to get good contact all night, smashing five home runs, including four off of starter Nick Pivetta. This is a four-game wraparound series, though, so the Red Sox can still grab a victory in this series if they can grab wins this afternoon and tomorrow.
That starts today, and they’ll be looking to get back on track with today’s starter as well. For the most part, Martín Pérez has thrived this season, coming through for a stretch as the team’s best starter. He took a big step back his last time out, though, against an Astros team that was all over him and knocked the southpaw out after only two innings. He’ll be looking to bounce back here, but he’s facing another very difficult group of hitters, which Nick Pivetta learned last night.
Over on the other side, the offense is going up against Robbie Ray, who has been surprisingly in control this year. He’s typically a guy who has to work around control issues to have success, but this year he’s still had the big stuff while also limiting his walks like never before. The Red Sox will look to knock him out of his rhythm behind a lineup that again features Xander Bogaerts, who had the last couple of days off. They also have J.D. Martinez in left with Hunter Renfroe DH’ing, and Bobby Dalbec at third with Rafael Devers getting the day off and Danny Santana at first.
