The Red Sox finish their string of AL cellar-dwelling opponents when they visit the plucky Orioles tonight (7:05 p.m., NESN) in Baltimore behind Eduardo Rodriguez, who looks to bounce back after his first poor start on the year.
The Sox are 3-4 so far on this run of lower-tier opponents, and the Orioles may be playing the best of that bunch. At 15-16, they’re just one game back of the Yankees, thanks to players like Matt Harvey, who gets the start tonight with his ERA clocking in at just over 4.00 — a major win for the O’s so far.
E-Rod is in the same boat ERA-wise, but if he can regain his form from two starts ago, and virtually all of them before that, he should be in good shape tonight. It would be especially nice for the Sox to get a strong starting pitching performance after the experimental theater they threw out there in all phases of the game against Detroit.
The big news in Lineup Land is that Marwin Gonzalez is leading off with both Kiké Hernández and Christian Arroyo not playing, apparently due to the “your most second base-type guy must bat first” rule, which absolutely seems to be a thing.
