FanPost Friday: What are the odds?

Can the Red Sox keep this up?

The Red Sox just continue to find ways to win games and show resilience night after night, a stark change from the last couple of seasons. There are still question marks on this roster to be sure, but they have been displaying an amount of fight that is necessary to win games, and that’s exactly what they’ve been doing for the majority of this season. After a big win on Thursday to steal a three-game set from the Blue Jays, Boston still sits atop the American League East with a 27-18 record, sitting one game above the second-place Rays.

Of course, even with all of this success we know that it is a long season and there is a long, long way to go. Teams who start hot falter as the year goes on each and every season, and that is reflected in playoff odds. That is what I want to talk about today, specifically with respect to the FanGraphs odds. FanGraphs gives the Red Sox now a 55 percent chance of making the postseason, an 18 percent chance to win the division, and a four percent chance at the World Series.

For this week’s FanPost Friday, we’re keeping it pretty open. Are these odds fair? Too high? Too low? Tell us why, and we may feature your piece on the front page of the site.
