Red Sox vs. Athletics lineups: Commence operation Avoid the Sweep

Garrett Richards faces down Sean Manaea, whose history against the Sox is... well he’s been nearly perfect, let’s say.

Help us, GR. You’re our only hope.

The Red Sox look to avoid their second sweep of the year tonight behind Garrett Richards (7:10 p.m., NESN, MLBN out-of-market.

The switch to more difficult competition has roiled our lads, and suddenly the AL East isn’t so comfortable. The dastardly Yankees are just one game back, and the Blue Jays are a half game behind them. Not ideal! Only one way to hold them all off, and that’s to win. So the agenda for tonight should reflect that in addition to reading, or re-reading, how and why I was blocked by Jeff Frye. Clear your schedules and whatnot.

Richards, who has gone from easily the Sox’s Wobblies starter to easily their most solid, gets the start in maybe their first must-win-ish game of the year. Hopefully my accidentally wearing my #PérezDay shirt doesn’t throw the world off it’s axis or Richards off his hot streak, but we’re both only human.

Michael Chavis is back at leadoff today, playing second, and Jonathan Araúz makes his first start of the year, playing short and batting ninth. This swings J.D. Martinez to left field and makes Xander Bogaerts a DH, which is a nice little rest. For the A’s, Mitch Moreland is all the way up to second in the batting order (to get the crying over with early), and Sean Manaea, who threw as good as game as you’ll see in his 2018 no-hitter against the eventual World Series champion Sox, starts for Oakland. Do you love to see it? No! But you do your best with what you’ve got.
