Red Sox at Orioles lineups: Eduardo Rodriguez is finally, blissfully and maybe tearfully back

New, comments

The lefty makes his first start since 2019 after his bouts with COVID and myocarditis last year. This is good.

The Red Sox head down to Baltimore to start their road slate against the mighty Orioles this afternoon at 3:05 p.m. behind Eduardo Rodriguez.

E-Rod, who appears to be over his dead arm and turned 28 yesterday, will make his first start since 2019 after missing all of 2020 due to COVID-induced myocarditis. For a guy who faced potentially never pitching again as a worst-case scenario, today has to come as sweet relief no matter what happens in the game. Maybe I’m just projecting because it comes as such relief to me, but I think the postgame quotes will tell the story. Have tissues handy, just in case.

Rodriguez will be matched by Matt Harvey, who overpowered the Sox through two innings on Saturday before holding on for dear life the rest of the way, and maybe this time the hits drop where they should and things go differently. The sweep of the Rays was cathartic, and the catharsis might be able to feast on Harvey’s cooking, such as it is. He is known for his meatballs.

Among those not partaking of the meatballs this afternoon, at least to start, is Xander Bogaerts, who gets a breather. Marwin Gonzalez is back in the lineup and taking his place at shortstop. Here are the full lineups:
