Well this came as a bit of a surprise. The rumors about Andrew Benintendi’s departure were hottest about a month ago when there were many real options to fill his spot out on the open market. Maybe that was the problem. Perhaps those options prevented a market for Benintendi from developing in any meaningful way.

Regardless of why the timing of the trade happened the way that it did the result is that the Red Sox will in all likelihood enter the 2021 season with none of Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr., or Mookie Betts in their outfield, something that would’ve been unthinkable at the end of 2018. Sometimes life comes at you fast.

We got the old three-man booth back together to discuss this trade and the ramifications it has on this roster. It sure seems like Franchy Cordero is going play a huge role for this team in 2021. Cordero is a super toolsy player who has been stymied by injuries for the majority of his career. Perhaps it finally clicks here. The team also added some much needed depth to the system, which we should be able to assess in a couple of months when the PTBNL are chosen.

We each give our takes on the trade, assess how this roster fits together, and who else might be added to this mix. Funny enough as we were recording the news of Marwin Gonzalez signing broke. He may represent the final piece of the winter before pitchers and catchers report next week.
