Braves take Game One
The World Series got underway on Tuesday night down in Houston, and the Atlanta Braves wasted no time at all to announce their presence against the Astros and get this series off with a bang. Jorge Soler led off the game for Atlanta and smashed a leadoff homer to give the Braves the earliest possible 1-0 lead. It was the first time in the 117-year history of the World Series that the top of the first of Game One was started with a homer. The Braves never really looked back from there.
They got a great start from veteran Charlie Morton, though his outing would not last as long as they would have liked. The pitcher was struck by a line drive in the leg, and while he stayed in the game for another perfect inning after that, he was eventually pulled after only 2 1⁄3 innings and X-rays later revealed a fractured fibula. But the Braves bullpen was up to the task in his stead, allowing just two runs the rest of the way which was more than enough for the offense. Atlanta got another homer from Adam Duvall and scored six runs total to take the first game of this Fall Classic. Game Two is Wednesday night at 8:09 PM ET.
A quiet day for Boston in Arizona
Down in the Arizona Fall League, there was not too much to report on from Tuesday’s action from a Red Sox perspective. Jeter Downs did play and didn’t hit a home run, which feels at least a little newsworthy these days. The infielder went 1-3 with a single, a walk, and a strikeout. He did also steal a couple bags. Kole Cottam also got the start at first base, going 0-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Meanwhile on the pitching side, Josh Winckowski was the first man out of Scottsdale’s bullpen and he allowed three runs in one inning of work on two singles, a double, and a homer. Andrew Politi finished out the game, tossing two scoreless innings on a single, a walk, and a strikeout.
