The Red Sox look to cling to their share of the second wild card spot as they begin the last regular season series of the year in Washington behind Eduardo Rodriguez (7:05 p.m., NESN).
With the Sox seemingly determined to miss the playoffs altogether, this could very well be E-Rod’s last start in a Red Sox uniform. Even if they make the Wildcard game and lose it, this is it for #Ed. If this is the end—and while he could come back, it sure feels like the end—hopefully it won’t be as ignominious as the last week and a half has been for Sox fans and players.
Put simply, the end of the season has sucked. The second half has largely been hot garbage, save for brief flashes of competence. What looked like a cakewalk to the Wildcard game exactly one week ago has turned out to be a walk over flaming hot coals, and it’s hard not to feel burnt—or just burnt out—by the whole thing.
Anyhow the National(s) League park means we get Hunter Renfroe, center fielder and a close-up view of Juan Soto, destroyer of worlds. Here are the full lineups:
