Red Sox agree to overslot deal with Blaze Jordan

We went months without baseball news, and now it is coming in hot and heavy. Obviously most of that over the last couple of days has been the league’s planned return, but the league has also seen most of the draft picks start to officially sign and join their new organizations. The Red Sox have been slow to this, though, not signing anybody until Wednesday afternoon. It was their second selection and third round pick Blaze Jordan who was the first to ink a deal with the team, agreeing to a $1.75 million bonus according to a report from Masslive’s Chris Cotillo.

If you’ll recall, the Red Sox went strategic with their draft approach, grabbing a player way down the rankings in Nick Yorke with their first pick presumably to save money and draft an overslot player with their second pick. That second pick was Jordan, and he does indeed sign a deal that is significantly overslot. The slot value for the spot Jordan was taken at number 89 overall was just $667,900.

We are not yet sure what the bonuses are for Yorke, or their other two picks — Jeremy Wu-Yelland and Shane Drohan — for that matter. That said, there is certainly a deal in place for Yorke and it is likely coming soon. Remember, if the team does not sign a player they lose that slot money, and if the Red Sox lose the slot money from their first round pick their overall pool money would be less than what Jordan signed for alone.

In total, the team has a pool of $5,129,900 for their four selections, and they can go as high as $5,386,395 (total pool plus five percent) without hitting the penalties.
