The story of baseball and its connection to parental/child relationships is one that we are all familiar with. It is certainly not universal and people find baseball independently all the time, but for very many of us we were handed down our love of sports generally and baseball more specifically because of our parents. They grew up loving it and having it as a big part of their lives, and they pass that on to us as their children.
Even more specifically than the love of the sport, they often pass down a love of the team. I am a Red Sox fan because my father and mother were Red Sox fans. If they were fans of any other team, even if I had still grown up in Boston, I almost certainly would have been rooting for that other team. That’s just how these things work. Fandom is a connection that very often comes specifically from that relationships with your parents.
I say all this because, well, this coming weekend is father’s day, which is usually a big weekend in baseball. Obviously that won’t be the case on the field this year what with there being no baseball and all, but we will still be celebrating. And as you’re thinking about what to get your dad, what makes more sense than once again celebrating that commonality in fandom that you two share? We’ve helped you out on that front, putting together a handy guide of Red Sox-related gifts for your fan of a father.
