The Red Sox lost one and tied one in their split squad action on Monday, and now they return home with just contest on the slate for Tuesday. They’ll be facing off against the Orioles in this one starting at 1:05 PM ET. There’s no TV broadcast this afternoon, unfortunately, but you can listen on 850 AM WEEI.
The biggest thing to watch for in this one probably lies in the starting pitcher, Ryan Weber. The Red Sox obviously have a battle for their fifth rotation spot, and it seems like Weber is the leader in the clubhouse are spring training just gets underway. The righty is out of options, which always helps in these things, and he performed well at times last year, although certainly not consistently. He’s been mentioned the most among coaches it seems, so if he has a solid spring I suspect he’ll get that job to start the year. That quest starts Tuesday, with today being his first start of the spring. Expect him to probably go two innings if everything goes according to plan.
On the offensive side of things, it’s a lineup with a bunch of regulars. Andrew Benintendi is back out there in the leadoff spot after hitting a leadoff dinger on Monday, and interestingly he’ll be playing center field. J.D. Martinez will be out in left with Jackie Bradley Jr. in right. That seems odd, but remember that Bradley and Kevin Pillar will both be in the outfield a bunch this year (assuming the former isn’t traded) and there’s been some indication that the latter may see more time in center field given Bradley’s arm and familiarity with Fenway. Elsewhere, Christian Vázquez is behind the plate, Mitch Moreland is at DH and prospect Bobby Dalbec gets the start at the hot corner.
