The Red Sox are coming off a close win on Saturday and now will be looking to continue in their role as the spoiler with another win on Sunday. The Phillies need wins right now to stay in wildcard contention, and it’s the Red Sox job to make that as difficult as possible. Gotta have something to play for, ya know?
Anyway, they’ll have Rick Porcello on the mound, who is also playing for a contract next year. The season as a whole has been too disappointing for these final couple weeks to really make a difference, but going out on a high note certainly couldn’t hurt. He’s going to want to keep the ball on the ground for this game, though, because the outfield today is....interesting. With Mookie Betts still out with his foot injury and Jackie Bradley Jr. getting the day off against the lefty, Boston is rolling with Sam Travis in left, Andrew Benintendi in center and J.D. Martinez in right. It’s going to be very interesting. On the infield, it’s a mostly normal alignment, though Marco Hernández gets the day off right after the team said they wanted to see as much of him as possible down the stretch. Instead, Chris Owings gets the start. The Phillies are rolling with veteran lefty Jason Vargas on the mound.
