Red Sox Minor Lines: Tzu-Wei Lin slugs two homers

And Alex Scherff struggles again.

Pawtucket W 5-4

Tzu-Wei Lin, SS: 2-3, 2 HR, 1 BB, 2 R, 3 RBI

Marco Hernandez, 2B: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K

Chris Owings, CF: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 K

Rusney Castillo, RF: 2-4, 1 CS

Chad De La Guerra, 3B: 1-4, 1 K

Bobby Dalbec, 1B: 0-4, 1 K

Josh Ockimey, DH: 1-3, 1 BB

Hector Velázquez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (15 pitches)

We haven’t talked a whole lot about Lin this year since he was last in the majors in early May. An injury ended that stint and he hasn’t been able to make it back to the bigs since then. For the most part, it’s been a disappointing year at the plate for the utility man after returning to game action in Pawtucket. Even after this big game he has an OPS of just .686 in Triple-A. Hopefully this can spark a run for him and he can get hot before a likely September call-up. Oh, and Owings cannot be stopped.

Portland W 2-0

Jarren Duran, CF: 0-3, 1 BB, 1

Marcus Wilson, RF: 0-4, 2 K

C.J. Chatham, SS: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K

Joey Curletta, DH: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 K

Luke Tendler, LF: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 R

Michael Osinski, 1B: 2-3, 1 RBI

Jhon Nunez, C: 2-2, 1 2B

Daniel McGrath: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K (97 pitches)

Eduard Bazardo: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K (18 pitches)

Dedgar Jimenez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K (13 pitches)

This Sea Dogs game was defined by the pitching, with the offense doing just enough to get the win. Their lineup can be forgiven, though, as they were going up against Casey Mize, one of the best minor-league arms in professional baseball. He was outdueled by Daniel McGrath, however, who has just been bananas for Portland this year. The lefty now has 87 innings for the Sea Dogs with a 1.34 ERA, 87 strikeouts and 38 walks. Over his last nine starts, dating back to June 21, he has allowed exactly one earned run.

Salem L 4-8

Garrett Benge, 1B: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K

Pedro Castellanos, LF: 1-5, 3 K, 1 CS, 1 PO

Edgar Corcino, RF: 2-4

Joan Martinez: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (49 pitches)

Well here’s an interesting thing. Castellanos had played exclusively at first base prior to Tuesday’s game. His defensive abilities suggest a first base-only profile, but it’s interesting trying to get his versatility up just a little bit. We’ve seen guys like Sam Travis make left field work, and while that’s no guarantee Castellanos can succeed in the outfield it gives a little hope. He’s not quite good enough at the plate to only stick at first base, so being able to move around a bit is probably his best bet at a major-league role someday. It is worth noting he played in 15 games in left field last season with Greenville, so it’s not totally new to him.

Greenville L 2-5

Everlouis Lozada, 2B: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K

Brandon Howlett, 3B: 0-4, 1 K

Triston Casas, 1B: 1-4, 1 K

Devlin Granberg, DH: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K

Tyler Dearden, LF: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E

Alex Scherff: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 1 K (58 pitches)

Hunter Haworth: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K (32 pitches)

I think it’s officially safe to call this something of a lost year for Scherff, who many were excited about as a potential breakout this year. He has certainly shown some flashes in 2019, but for the most part it’s been disappointing through and through. After this latest tough day, in which he only allowed a couple runs but clearly had command issues, his ERA is up to 5.26 on the season.

Lowell L 4-16

Gilberto Jimenez, DH: 2-5, 1 2B, 2 K

Cameron Cannon, 2B: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K

Joe Davis, 1B: 1-2, 1 HR, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 E

Marino Campana, RF: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 E

Nicholas Northcut, 3B: 1-4, 1 K, 1 E

Antoni Flores, SS: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 E

We’ve talked some about the struggles of Flores at the plate this year, which continued in this game. He now has a .183 batting average with a .534 OPS. It should also be mentioned that he is struggling in the field having made his eighth error of the season on Tuesday. Now, errors are aplenty in the New York Penn League with so many raw players and none of this is necessarily a long-term concern, but it’s also not worse than the alternative.

GCL G1 L 4-5 (F/11)

Dominic D’Alessandro, 1B: 1-3, 2 BB, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K

Matthew Lugo, SS: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 R

Nilo Rijo, 3B: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 K, 2 SB

Breiner Licona, C: 2-4, 1 BB

GCL G2 L 1-2

Ceddanne Rafaela, 2B: 2-4

Dominic D’Alessandro, 1B: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E

Danny Diaz, 3B: 0-4, 3 K

Matthew Lugo, SS: 0-4

Dylan Spacke: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K

DSL 1 SUSP

DSL 2 L 4-6

Bryan Gonzalez, RF: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 R

Jose Ramirez: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
