Anyone in attendance for this doubleheader in Pawtucket on Thursday certainly got their money’s worth, with the two teams playing a total of four extra innings between the two games. The first contest ended on a walk-off grand slam from Centeno while the latter ended when outfielder Cole Sturgeon had to pitch for the PawSox and he gave up four unearned runs. Centeno and Ockimey were probably the stars of the day, with the true starts — Chavis and Dalbec — both hitting homers as well. It’s possible we see all four of them in September, though probably not likely.
Portland W 4-0
Jarren Duran, CF: 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB
Marcus Wilson, RF: 0-5, 3 K
Tommy Joseph, DH: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 3 K
Joey Curletta, 1B: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 K
Jeremy Rivera, SS: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 SB
Konner Wade: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (94 pitches)
Another day, another huge start for Wade, who continues to shine in the Red Sox organization. The righty has been rolling for months now, as we talked about after his last start also featured seven shutout innings. The former Rockie and Orioles minor leaguer, Wade did allow seven runs over 5 2⁄3 two starts ago, but beyond that he hasn’t allowed more than two runs in an outing since way back on June 19. Even that was a seven-inning, three-run affair. Wade’s likely not a September call-up candidate, but he’s a guy to watch as a sleeper for rotation depth in 2020.
Salem W 1-0
Ryan Fitzgerald, SS: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI
Devlin Granberg, LF: 0-4
Grant Williams, 2B: 2-3, 1 K
Enmanuel De Jesus: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
Speaking of lower-tier prospects who are on a roll, De Jesus has been pitching extremely well for Salem of late. The pitch-counting tool was clearly not workin in Salem as they said he only threw 39 pitches and, well, I find that hard to believe. They also said four of the seven pitchers threw no balls. Again, tough to believe that! As for De Jesus, the southpaw now has 13 shutout innings over his last two starts with 13 strikeouts to just two walks. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs over his last four outings and the last time he allowed more than three earned runs was back on July 4.
Greenville L 0-11
Brandon Howlett, 3B: 0-4, 2 K
Triston Casas, 1B: 1-4, 1 K
Let’s just not talk about this one.
Lowell G1 L 3-6
Gilberto Jimenez, CF: 0-4, 1 K, 1 CS
Cameron Cannon, 2B: 0-1, 1 BB
Nick Decker, RF: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K
Stephen Scott, 1B: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 2 K
Antoni Flores, SS: 0-3, 1 K
Marino Campana, DH: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 R, 1 RBI
Noah Song: 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K (53 pitches)
Lowell G2 W 7-2
Gilberto Jimenez, CF: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI
Stephen Scott, 1B: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 K
Cameron Cannon, SS: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 E
Jaxx Groshans, DH: 0-1, 3 BB, 2 R, 1 K
Nicholas Northcut, 3B: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI, 3 K
Nick Decker, RF: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Chris Murphy: 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Pitching was the story for this doubleheader in Lowell on Thursday, with both Spinners starters being early(ish) picks from this summer’s draft that have dominated in their first professional seasons. Song is obviously the bigger name, and he had a solid day. He now has a 1.06 ERA over seven starts with 19 strikeouts and five walks over 17 innings of work. Murphy, meanwhile, has been even more dominant than Song and after this outing his ERA went up to 1.08 with 34 strikeouts and seven walks over 33 1⁄3 innings.
