There’s a new face up in Triple-A with C.J. Chatham getting the promotion to finish off the year in Pawtucket. The former second round pick somewhat quietly had a solid season in Portland and is now right on the doorstep of his major-league debut. I don’t think he’s going to get that this year with a September call-up, but he should get that first chance at some point in 2020. The ceiling is a bit limited due to a lack of power, but Chatham can play shortstop and has gotten some experience at second base. Offensively he relies largely on putting the ball in play and getting hits. With Portland this season he hit .297/.333/.403.
Portland G1 W 2-1
Jarren Duran, CF: 1-2
Marcus Wilson, RF/CF: 1-3
Jerry Downs, 1B: 2-3, 2 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
Jeremy Rivera, SS: 2-3
Konner Wade: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K (79 pitches)
Portland G2 L 0-2
Jarren Duran, CF: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K
Marcus Wilson, RF: 0-2, 1 BB, 2 K
Kutter Crawford: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K (44 pitches)
Eduard Bazardo: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K (21 pitches)
We got a couple of returns from injuries in Wednesday’s doubleheader for the SeaDogs. One, for Jarren Duran, wasn’t really an absence as he just left early on Tuesday with what was a presumed (on my part) injury. Clearly it was nothing to be worried about, though, as he played both ends of the doubleheader here. In the second game, Crawford made his first start since July 12. I’m not entirely sure what injury caused the 2018 breakout to miss a month of action, but he’s back now. The righty clearly isn’t quite stretched out so I wouldn’t expect big innings over the last few weeks of the season, but getting him some work ahead of a 2020 season that could see his major-league debut if everything goes perfectly is not a bad thing.
Salem W 7-5
Garrett Benge, DH: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB
Ryan Fitzgerald, 3B: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
Pedro Castellanos, 1B: 1-5, 1 3B, 1 R, 1 RBI
Keitch Curcio, CF: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB
Victor Acosta, LF/RF: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 BB, 2 R, 1 RBI
Grant Williams, SS: 3-4, 1 2B, 2 R, 1 K, 1 E
Only a triple for Castellanos in this game, what a bum. Acosta did go deep in this game for his second dinger of the year. The outfielder somewhat quietly has had a solid year for Salem. I liked Acosta’s swing a lot when I saw him a few years ago down in Lowell and he’s using it to hit for a .294 batting average this year with a .372 OBP to boot. His power likely limits his ceiling, but Acosta is someone to keep an eye on as a deep sleeper in the system. Also, Williams was promoted to Salem for this game, a bit of a surprising development as he didn’t impress much at the plate with Greenville.
Greenville L 0-5
Brandon Howlett, 3B: 0-3, 1 K, 1 E
Triston Casas, 1B: 0-4, 1 K
Kole Cottam, C: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
It’s been a tough go down the stretch for Howlett, who has had an uneven first full professional season. Going back to July 24, a stretch of 16 games, the third baseman has just six hits with just two of them going for extra bases. For a 19-year-old in his first full season this kind of rollercoaster is not unexpected and not particularly worrisome. That said, we’ll be looking for a bit more consistency next year at Salem.
