The Red Sox have some real momentum heading into the third game of this series against the Angels given how well they’ve played the first two nights. On Thursday, it was the Chris Sale show as the team’s ace pitched like he was exactly that in an absolutely stellar shutdown performance. On Friday, Brian Johnson was fine but the bullpen had a long night innings-wise, but not performance-wise. The relief corps gave an underrated performance that was only underrated because the offense went bananas. J.D. Martinez led the way in a four-hit, two-homer showing but the rest of the group did their part as well.
Now, they turn to Rick Porcello to hold that momentum. The righty has some momentum of his own finally coming through with his first strong start in weeks and will look to carry that over against an Angels lineup that doesn’t impress with the numbers but has plenty of talent that will punish mistakes. Mistakes have been Porcello’s biggest issue, and we all know he is capable of getting hit by any lineup if he’s not commanding the edges of the zone. Offensively, Boston is giving a few days off with Andrew Benintendi and Rafael Devers both sitting. They’ll have Sam Travis in left and batting cleanup while Michael Chavis will be at the hot corner. That leaves first base open for Christian Vázquez.
