Red Sox Minor Lines: Jarren Duran has a big day

We’ve been waiting for this from him in Double-A

Pawtucket L 2-3 (F/11)

Gorkys Hernández, CF: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, 1 K, 1 SB

Tzu-Wei Lin, RF: 0-4, 1 K

Chris Owings, SS: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 RBI, 1 K

Rusney Castillo, DH: 1-5, 1 RBI, 2 K

Josh Ockimey, 1B: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K

Darwinzon Hernandez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K (14 pitches)

Travis Lakins: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K (35 pitches)

Trevor Kelley: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (21 pitches)

Bobby Poyner: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K (26 pitches)

It was another tough loss for the PawSox, who are struggling right now. The offense isn’t doing much of anything of late, and that continued in this game. On the pitching side, though, they did get some strong performances from the bullpen including one from Hernandez. This was the lefty’s first appearance in relief, and he tossed a perfect frame with a strikeout. We all know his potential is to be a massive help in the majors, and this was a great first step. Now, let’s see him string a handful of these together.

Portland W 11-5

Jarren Duran, CF: 4-5, 1 2B, 1 R

C.J. Chatham, SS: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 K

Bobbby Dalbec, 3B: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K

Joey Curletta, DH: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 BB, 3 R, 3 RBI, 1 K

Tate Matheny, LF: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 K

Jhon Nunez, C: 2-5, 1 K

Jerry Downs, 1B: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 E

I think the most impressive part of this offensive explosion from the Sea Dogs may be that they got it done without getting production from Dalbec. More seriously, the big takeaway here is the big game from Duran. We’ve been waiting a while for the outfielder to put together a game like this in Double-A after doing it so often in Salem earlier in the year. Duran had been getting a bit better of late, but this was the first time in Portland he’d gotten as many as three hits, never mind four. His batting average is now up to .240 with the Sea Dogs.

Salem W 5-1 (F/7)

Pedro Castellanos, 1B: 0-2

Ryan Fitzgerald, SS: 0-2, 1 BB

Marcus Wilson, CF: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 R

Dylan Hardy, DH: 2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI

Nick Lovullo, 2-2, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 RBI

Daniel Gonzalez: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K (90 pitches)

Zach Schelleger: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K (18 pitches)

Salem picked up the win in the shortened game on Friday without getting much of anything in terms of production from their top players. All of their RBI came from the bottom four hitters in the lineup. Hell, they even got a solid relief appearance from Schellenger.

Greenville W 4-0

Everlouis Lozada, 2B: 2-4, 1 R, 1 CS

Tyler Esplin, RF: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K

Triston Casas, 1B: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 RBI

Devlin Granberg, DH: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI

Chase Shugart: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K (94 pitches)

The pitching was clearly the story in this shutout victory for the drive, with Shugart leading the way in his start. Last year’s 12th round pitch got a late start after a suspension to begin the year, but the righty has been great since then pitching to a 1.76 ERA with 39 strikeouts and ten walks in 46 innings of work. Also, nice to see a home run from Casas, his first long ball since June 25.

Lowell W 6-3

Gilberto Jimenez, CF: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K

Elih Marrero, C: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI

Nicholas Northcut, 3B: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K

Nick Decker, RF: 1-4, 1 2B

Antoni Flores, SS: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K

Ryan Zeferjahn: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K (32 pitches)

Kelvin Sanchez: 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 8 K (69 pitches)

This was a solid all-around performance from the Spinners, who didn’t really have any one guy take over the game. Marrero, last year’s eighth round pick, was the only player with multiple hits in Lowell’s lineup. Meanwhile, Zeferjahn got his second professional start and looked solid once again while Sanchez came out of nowhere to blow away eight batters in just four innings. The latter has never really shown that kind of stuff as a pro before.
