Red Sox Minor Lines: More positives for Mata and Ward

And a three-hit night for Dalbec.

Pawtucket W 7-3

Cole Sturgeon, CF: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K

Marco Hernandez, DH: 2-5, 1 R

Chris Owings, SS: 0-4, 1 BB, 3 K

Rusney Castillo, RF: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 3 RBI

Chad De La Guerra, 2B: 0-4, 2 K

Josh Ockimey, 1B: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 K

Óscar Hernández, C: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

Brian Johnson: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K (16 pitches)

Kyle Hart: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K (77 pitches)

Hector Velázquez: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K (9 pitches)

Bobby Poyner: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K (21 pitches)

This was a fairly dominant win for the PawSox, who got all of their runs from the help of the long ball. It was nice in particular to see a homer from Ockimey, who has had a brutal second half of the season. The lefty has the potential to be a very interesting platoon player, but consistency is too much of an issue for him to be relied upon as soon as next year. A strong finish would help alleviate those concerns. On the mound, Johnson wasn’t great in his inning of work but didn’t implode either. He’s almost certain to start one of the games of Saturday’s doubleheader in the Bronx.

Portland W 9-3

Jarren Duran, CF: 2-4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 K

C.J. Chatham, SS: 1-5, 2 R, 1 K

Bobby Dalbec, 3B: 3-5, 1 3B, 4 RBI

Joey Curletta, 1B: 0-5, 2 K

Marcus Wilson, LF: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K

Bryan Mata: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K (94 pitches)

Dedgar Jimenez: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (33 pitches)

This was a relentless game for the SeaDogs, who managed nine runs despite just a pair of extra base hits with none of them going over the fence. Every starter had at least one hit, though, and they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the second. That was more than enough for Mata, who wasn’t exactly perfect but showed off his strikeout stuff in this one. His name hasn’t come up much in trade talks, which makes some sense given the Red Sox’ troubles in developing starting pitchers. That’s not to say he’s untouchable, but rather that they’d almost certainly prefer to trade one of their position players than go to Mata.

Salem L 6-7 (F/10)

Ryan Fitzgerld, SS: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 CS

Pedro Castellanos, 1B: 2-5, 1 R, 1 K

Victor Acosta, LF: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K

Jagger Rusconi, DH: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K

Nick Lovullo, 2B: 2-3, 2 2B, 1 BB, 2 RBI, 1 K

Thad Ward: 5 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 7 K (75 pitches)

Zach Schellenger: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (28 pitches)

This was a tough game for Salem, but if you’re looking for a positive look no further than Ward. Last year’s fifth round pick has been right behind Mata in terms of starting pitchers boosting their prospect status in 2019, but just looking at his line there’s not much to be impressed with. Almost all of the damage was done in the first inning, though, with all three hits, all the runs and two of the walks coming there. Obviously you can’t just erase the worst inning of a starter’s outing, but that it happened in the first tells us something. It tells us that Ward bounced back from getting punched in the mouth and did well for the next four innings. These are the little things that can tell us a lot about a young player.

Jaxx Groshans, C: 3-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K

Nicholas Northcut, 3B: 0-4

Stephen Scott, DH: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 2 K

Marino Campana, LF: 3-3, 2 RBI, 3 SB

Antoni Flores, SS: 0-2, 1 BB, 2 K

Ryan Zeferjahn: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 1 K (32 pitches)

Ryan Fernandez: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K (50 pitches)
