Red Sox Minor Lines: Noah Song’s debut

And Daniel McGrath is dealing.

Pawtucket W 3-1

Marco Hernandez, 2B: 1-4, 1 K

Chris Owings, LF: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 K

Rusney Castillo, RF: 0-4, 3 K

Chad De La Guerra, 3B: 2-3, 1 K

Tzu-Wei Lin, SS: 1-4, 2 K

Jantzen Witte, 1B: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB

Kyle Hart: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 8 K (101 pitches)

Tanner Houck: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K (18 pitches)

Trevor Kelley: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (17 pitches)

Another day, another homer for Owings. The former major-league utility player has been unreal since getting to Pawtucket and now has eight homers in 30 games and a .974 OPS. On the pitching side, Houck didn’t allow any runs but is struggling a bit with his command. He has yet to allow a run in four relief appearances with Pawtucket but has five walks and only two strikeouts in his 4 23 innings.

Portland L 0-1 (F/10)

Jarren Duran, CF: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 SB

C.J. Chatham, S: 0-5, 1 K

Bobby Dalbec, 3B: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K

Joey Curletta, 1B: 1-4

Luke Tendler, LF: 2-3, 1 BB

Daniel McGrath: 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K (99 pitches)

Durbin Feltman: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K (12 pitches)

The offense just didn’t get the job done in this game for the Sea Dogs, as they got six hits and two walks but couldn’t push any runs across. Duran did get a double here, continuing what’s been a much better stretch at the plate for him of late. On the mound, McGrath hasn’t gotten a lot of shine in this space but he’s been stellar in Portland. The lefty now has a remarkable 46 scoreless inning streak.

Salem L 0-4

Garrett Benge, 3B: 2-4, 1 K

Ryan Fitzgerald, SS: 1-3

Pedro Castellanos, DH: 1-4, 1 K

Keith Curcio, CF: 2-4

Joan Martinez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (22 pitches)

I got nothin’ on this one.

Greenville W 2-1

Everlouis Lozada, 2B: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K

Brandon Howlett, 3B: 0-4, 4 K

Triston Casas, 1B: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K

Devlin Granberg, DH: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K

Brayan Bello: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K (88 pitches)

Logan Browning: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K (24 pitches)

There are a few first- and second-tier guys on this Greenville roster, but I want to talk a bit about some of the other guys here. Granberg, for example, has quietly been outstanding this year. The senior sign in last summer’s draft has eight homers on the year with an impressive .848 OPS in his first full pro season. Bello, meanwhile, has been an absolute rollercoaster but is settling in for another strong run right now. The righty has gone six innings in three straight outings and hasn’t allowed more than two runs since June 29. Finally, my admiration for Browning’s numbers have been no secret this year. He’s now down to a 1.79 ERA over 55 13 innings this year with 73 strikeouts and only nine walks. I feel like that deserves more shine than it’s gotten, even for a 23-year-old in Low-A.

Lowell W 4-3

Gilberto Jimenez, CF: 1-3, 1 BB

Cameron Cannon, SS: 0-4, 3 K

Jaxx Groshans, DH: 1-4, 1 K

Nicholas Northcut, 3B: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K

Joe Davis, 1B: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 K

Nick Decker, RF: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 R

Antoni Flores, 2B: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K

Noah Dong: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K (19 pitches)

Jenrry Mejia: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (11 pitches)

(I’m keeping the Dong typo for posterity)

This Spinners won this one thanks to a huge three-run shot from Davis in the seventh, but the story of Thursday’s game was the starter. That would be fourth rounder Noah Song, who made his professional debut. By now most know about Song, but if you don’t he is a borderline first round talent who fell due to military service that could keep him out of baseball for the next two years. There’s still a chance that changes before he has to report to Florida for flight school, but whatever the case there is a chance the Red Sox got a massive steal with this pick.
