Red Sox at Rays Lineups: Looking for another good Sale Day

Looking to carry over momentum from Monday

MLB: Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

We all know by now that the Red Sox are in the middle of their most important stretch of the season as they try to figure out if they are still true contenders or if it might be time to start looking towards 2020. They got off to a good start in this crucial two-week slate of games, winning big in Tampa Bay for the first game of a three-game set. They’ve had big, important wins throughout this season, though. The difficult part of the year for the 2019 Red Sox has been to take momentum from these kinds of wins and turn it into extended win streaks against good teams. This would be the perfect time to buck that trend.

In that quest, they’ll be sending Chris Sale to the mound. Obviously, the Red Sox ace has not looked the part for the majority of the season. He was in the midst of a really concerning stretch prior to his last start, but against the Blue Jays he looked about as strong as he has all year. Although Sale had been hit around by Toronto earlier in the year, that lineup is not quite the test a contender like the Rays might provide, even as they are sliding. Sale needs to carry the momentum from that last start and get on a hot stretch if this team wants to make a true run at the postseason.

Meanwhile, it’s a mostly straight-forward lineup for the Red Sox going up against Yonny Chirinos. Boston does get Mitch Moreland back in the lineup and at first base, and Michael Chavis sits again as he battled back spasms. Sandy León is again behind the plate for Sale and Brock Holt is at second. The full lineups are below.
