Red Sox vs. Northeastern Lineups: Baseball is back

The first game of the year!

MLB: Boston Red Sox-Media Day Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

We made it! In baseball terms at least, the winter is over and spring is officially upon us. Today is the first day of real baseball on a real field on my real TV. As always, the Red Sox are starting off their spring schedule against college opponents, though they aren’t going with the traditional doubleheader agaisnt both Northeastern and Boston College. Instead only the former will be heading down to the Fort for the game. Still, it’s baseball and we can’t complain about that. So, without further ado, it is the first lineup of the year.

  1. Tzu-Wei Lin, SS
  2. Blake Swihart, C
  3. Christian Vázquez, DH
  4. Bobby Dalbec, 3B
  5. Sam Travis, 1B
  6. Chad De La Guerra, 2B
  7. Tate Matheny, CF
  8. Cole Sturgeon, RF
  9. Jagger Rusconi, LF

SP: Mike Shawaryn, RHP

Obviously this is not the most exciting lineup we’ve ever seen. Unless something disastrous happens, at most one of these players will be in the Opening Day lineup and it wouldn’t be surprising if none of them were. That being said, there are certainly things to watch for. The main story of the spring on the position player side of things will be which catchers make the cut and which one is off the roster by Opening Day. Two of the three contenders for that position are in the lineup today with Swihart putting on the pads. Lin figures to be the first call-up if an infielder gets hurt this year. Dalbec is one of the most exciting prospects in camp this year and is liable to hit a monster homer in any at bat. On the pitching side, Shawaryn gets the start in a year in which he could provide depth in the rotation and/or the bullpen at the highest level. After him, Darwinzon Hernandnez, Domingo Tapia and Josh Taylor are expected to throw, per Christopher Smith of Masslive.

Today’s game can be seen on Fox 25 for those of you in the Boston market, NESN for everyone else in New England and MLB Network for those outside of New England all together. First pitch is at 1:05 PM ET. We made it. It’s finally here.
