The Winter Meetings have now come and gone, but for the first time in a long time the Meetings themselves were really fun! This year was the opposite of the last couple of years in so many ways as this year we saw Stephen Strasburg, Gerrit Cole, and Anthony Rendon all sign massive deals while at the Winter Meetings. This is great for baseball even if it doesn’t directly impact the Red Sox roster
The team was not inactive itself taking Jonathan Arauz in the Rule 5 draft on the closing day of the meetings. Additionally, the team agreed to terms with an infielder, José Peraza, and starting pitcher, Martín Pérez. These moves were underwhelming to most, but on the show we dig into each signing and look at both the positives and negatives of each move specifically:
- What can the team expect from Rule 5 selection Jonathan Arauz?
- Will he stick on the 40 man roster?
- José Peraza was signed for three million dollars, is he the everyday second baseman now?
- What does this mean from Brock Holt?
- Can the tweaks that Martín Pérez made to his repertoire help him be a suitable replacement for new Met Rick Porcello?
In addition to discussing these moves, we spend a bunch of time looking at the David Price market and how the trade of Corey Kluber to the Rangers might inform us of his market. We also spend a bunch of time speculating returns and fits for Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts focusing specifically on these questions:
- What would a trade for Price look like?
- Is Jackie Bradley Jr. going to be a target for the Texas Rangers now?
- What teams out there could potentially fit both Mookie Betts and Price?
- Which teams are the best fits for each player?
We then close the show with a whole bunch of listener questions, so thanks to all of you who submitted one.
