Red Sox vs. Yankees lineup: Halfway there

New, comments

The Sox can go 8.5 up against the Yankees with a win today behind Nathan Eovaldi

MLB: New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox
Damage.
Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

The Red Sox (77-34) look to continue damaging their closest rival and move to an 8.5 game division lead when they look for their third straight win against the Yankees (68-40) this afternoon at Fenway Park (4:05 p.m., NESN, FS1).

About today’s game: Nathan Eovaldi (4-4, 3.80 ERA) makes his second start of the year for Boston. He’ll be faced by Chance Adams (NR), who walks a guy every other inning on average and gives up a homer a game... in AAA ball. It’s his major league debut. It could be a long afternoon in the humid Boston air.

The lineups were late today because Alex Cora waited on Xander Bogearts’s availability. Verdict? Available! X is back in and playing shortstop, batting fifth. Mitch Moreland is back at first base and hitting third, presumably while Pearce presumably gets his plutonium recharge. Brock Holt’s at second base, thereby ending Mookie Betts’s chance at the Gold Glove.

About last night’s game: Rick Porcello pitched the game of his life, a complete-game, 86-pitch one-hitter, Pearce homered for the fourth time in two games and the Sox overcame Cora’s first inning ejection to beat back the Bronx Bombers, 4-1. Read Matt’s recap here, and praise be.

Forecast: 75 degrees with 88 percent humidity and maybe some rain. Very bad! But also: taters, mostly likely.

Today’s reading: Matt says Dave Dombrowski is actually good. Weirdo.

A good and true tweet from last night from a Yankees fan:
