Red Sox at Phillies lineup: Rick Porcello looks to atone for Boston’s only August loss

New, comments

The Sox have lost one game this month. It was Porcello’s last start. He can make things right tonight in Philadelphia.

The Red Sox (85-35) look to continue their own personal Summerslam tour tonight against the Phillies (65-52) tonight behind Rick Porcello at Citizen’s Bank Ballpark (7:05 p.m., NESN, MLBN out-of-network). Read Matt’s series preview here.

About tonight’s game: Porcello (14-5, 4.17 ERA), who was touched up for seven runs last time out in Toronto, leading the team’s only loss of the month, looks to get back on track against a Philly team hanging a mere game out of first place in the N.L. East. He’ll face Nick Pivetta (7-9, 4.51 ERA), a guy whose numbers undersell how good he’s been. Pivetta is striking out more than 11 guys per 9 innings and has a FIP of 3.49 with an xFIP even lower than that. Like many of the young Phils, he good.

Andrew Benintendi is back in the lineup after resting through a case of “heavy legs.” Jackie Bradley Jr.’s out because there ain’t no DH in these parts.

About Sunday’s game: Chris Sale has 12Ks in 5 innings and probably would have broken the single-game strikeout record if he hadn’t been on an egregiously low pitch count. The Sox won, of course, but a 4-1 score, but Craig Kimbrel made it interesting again.

Forecast: 79 degrees and humid, with a 15 percent chance of rain and/or batteries.

Today’s reading: Because it’s never too early, Jake Kostik looks ahead to the 2018 free agent reliever class.
