Pawtucket W 6-5
Tzu-Wei Lin, SS: 2-5, 2 RBI
Kyle Wren, CF: 0-3, 2 BB, 3 K
Adam Lind, DH: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K
Mike Miller, 2B: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 K
Rusney Castillo, PH: 1-1, 1 R, 2 RBI
Jalen Beeks: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 8 K (91 pitches)
Ryan Brasier: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (10 pitches)
We’ll have more on Wren today, but the son of Red Sox executive Frank Wren made his organizational debut on Wednesday. As for Beeks, the swing and miss was there but the lefty still wasn’t as dominant as he was for much of the first half, allowing two homers and a double in this game. At the same time, if this is a bad run for Beeks that’s a good sign. Brasier isn’t someone we’ve talked about at all this year but he’s been very impressive out of Pawtucket’s bullpen this year. His path to Boston is blocked, but he could get a more realistic shot somewhere else in 2019.
Portland W 7-5
Jeremy Rivera, SS: 1-5, 1 R, 1 K
Chad De La Guerra, 2B: 1-5, 1 R, 3 K
Josh Ockimey, 1B: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Luke Tendler, PH/RF: 1-1, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI
Tony Renda, LF: 2-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K
Austin Rei, C: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI
Teddy Stankiewicz: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K (111 pitches)
It was largely a group effort for the SeaDogs on Wednesday as they managed seven runs without a real standout performance. Tendler’s home run was the big one as it came in the ninth to give Portland the lead. Other than that, Rei had a nice day in what has quietly been a solid year from him. His .236 batting average isn’t great, but he’s combined that with great plate discipline and solid enough power for a .755 OPS. That’s easily his best as a pro.
Salem L 1-7
Tyler Hill, LF: 0-4, 1 K
Brett Netzer, 2B: 1-4
Bobby Dalbec, 3B: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E
C.J. Chatham, SS: 0-3, 1 K
Daniel Gonzalez: 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K (76 pitches)
It was a brutal day for just about everyone for Salem on Wednesday, including Netzer. The second baseman has been going through a rough stretch of late with just four hits in his last eight games.
Greenville W 4-2
Ryan Fitzgerald, SS: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 R
Garrett Benge, 1B: 3-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Jordan Wren, LF: 2-4, 1 K
Denyi Reyes: 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K (87 pitches)
Another big day on the mound for Reyes, who has been on some kind of run of late. He’s now allowed more than two runs just once since May 2, and his ERA has fallen under 2.00. Meanwhile, Fitzgerald was signed out of Indy Ball earlier this year, and he’s been impressive for the Drive of late.
Lowell W 7-4 (F/10)
Jarren Duran, 2B: 3-4, 1 3B, 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB
Cole Brannen, CF: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 RBI, 1 K
Devlin Granberg, DH: 2-4, 1 BB, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
Tyler Esplin, RF: 1-5, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Korby Batesole, SS: 2-4, 1 K, 1 E
Rio Gomez: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K (60 pitches)
So, yeah, I have to talk about Duran. The seventh round pick continues to dominate the New York Penn League and now through 15 games he is hitting .361/.403/.623. I’m liking the experience.
GCL L 4-5
Ricardo Cubillan, 1B: 1-2, 2 BB
Brandon Howlett, 3B: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 R, 1 K
I don’t know. I’ve got nothing. The GCL is less exciting when the three top players are sitting for various reasons.
DSL 1 W 2-0
Gilberto Jimenez, CF: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB
Ceddnne Rafaela, 3B: 1-4, 1 R
Emerson Ortiz: 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
DSL 2 L 2-3
Nelfy Abreu, 3B: 0-3, 1 BB
Carlos Martinez, LF: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 1 K
Cristofe Tineo: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K
The Red Sox DSL clubs are highlighted by their talent on the position player side of thing, but Wednesday was a showcase for some of the unheralded pitching talent. The real story, though, is Danny Diaz sitting again. Still unclear what’s happening there.
Player of the Day: I really wanted to give this one to Duran, but I couldn’t in could conscience pass on Denyi Reyes. The 21-year-old right hander has been impressive all year, and is putting himself on the radar as someone to pay close attention to every time he takes the mound.
