The Red Sox (73-33) look to win their third straight game behind newly acquired starter Nathan Eovaldi (3-4, 4.26 ERA) when they wrap up a four-game set with the plucky Twins (48-55) today at Fenway Park (1:05 p.m., NESN).
About tonight’s game: Eovaldi brings his stuff to Boston for the first time as a good guy, and while that change is in flux. He’s got fastball speed to burn, but as Kenny Kelly noted at Beyond the Box Score, he’s using more offspeed stuff these days. His fastball works when it’s up or low in the zone, and gets hit in the middle (shocker), and he’s at his best when the fastball and cutter are “tunneling,” making it hard for hitters to tell them apart.
The Twins counter with No. 1 starter José Berríos (10.4, 3.48 ERA), a guy with ace potential who might not be quite there yet but may be by the end of the year, and, along with Kyle Gibson, is one of Minnesota’s two most capable arms. He’ll face a lineup that, in the absence of the injured Rafael Devers, has Blake Swihart at third base. For real. Also Steve Pearce is at first for the hobbling Mitch Moreland, but mostly the Swihart thing.
About last night’s game: It looked like another painstaking back-and-forth with this resilient Minnesota team for a while, but the Sox broke it open late to fulfill our Twitter prophecy and take the victory, 10-4. Read Matt’s recap here.
Forecast: 82 degrees with a ZERO percent chance of rain.
Today’s reading: The Bible! (Just kidding. No reading today.)
Un bon tweet d’hier:
I was very wrong. Now please score 4 runs and get Velazquez for the 9th.https://t.co/QZFG1PYBnk
