Pawtucket L 1-3
Rusney Castillo, CF: 2-4, 1 K
Adam Lind, 1B: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 R
Sam Travis, LF: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 1 K
Mike Miller, SS: 2-3, 1 CS
Marcus Walden: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K (18 pitches)
Williams Jerez: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K (20 pitches)
We haven’t really talked much about Jerez this year, but the converted outfielder is an interesting name to watch in the bullpen. Already having a spot on the 40-man roster, he seems likely to get a cup of coffee in September, but it’s next year to really watch out for. His control still needs to come around, but with 66 strikeouts in 50 innings of work the southpaw has some intriguing stuff, particularly someone who’s only been pitching for a few years.
Portland L 7-8 (F/10)
Danny Mars, RF: 2-5, 2 R, 2 K
Michael Chavis, 3B: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 E
Jantzen Witte, DH: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB
Luke Tendler, LF: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 K
Jordan Betts, 1B: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E
Jhon Nunez, C: 2-5, 1 K, 1 CS
Deiner Lopez, SS/2B: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E
Nich Lovullo, 2B: 2-4, 2 K
Teddy Stankiewicz: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K (91 pitches)
This was a strange game as Portland pitchers didn’t allow an earned run through eight innings before converted catcher Jordan Weems imploded in the ninth and tenth. As for the offense, well, it’s nice to see Chavis getting back in the swing of things with his second dinger of the year (in Portland). I’m still a big believer in that bat, and a strong finish to the year would be huge for his stock.
Salem L 4-8
Brett Netzer, 2B: 4-5, 1 2B, 2 R, 1 RBI
C.J. Chatham, SS: 2-5, 1 RBI, 2 K, 2 SB
Bobby Dalbec, 3B: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K
Jerry Downs, 1B: 1-2, 1 2B, 2 BB
Jordan Procyshen, DH: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Dalbec going deep is great to see, and he now has 24 homers on the year. Netzer is the guy I want to talk about though, as the 2017 third round pick had been struggling a bit lately. Overall, however, he’s had a solid year with a .344 OBP, but he’s going to need to hit for some power if he’s going to make it as he moves up the ladder. The ceiling doesn’t need to be huge since he plays second base, but a .075 ISO like he has now won’t cut it.
Greenville G1 W 4-1
Pedro Castellanos, LF: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 R
Zach Sterry, DH: 2-3, 1 2B
Denyi Reyes: 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K (87 pitches)
Greenville G2 L 1-7
Kervin Suarez, CF: 3-3, 1 2B, 1 R
Another day, another big start for Reyes. The righty has utterly dominated Low-A this year, and this latest gem pushed his ERA down to 1.76 on the year and he also has 119 strikeouts to just 13 walks.
Lowell L 8-10
Jarren Duran, CF: 1-5, 1 RBI
Tyler Dearden, DH: 3-5, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 K
Devlin Granberg, 1B: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB
Tyler Esplin, RF: 1-5, 1 R, 1 K
Andre Colon, 2B: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 R, 1 E
Alan Marrero, C: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 3 RBI, 2 K
Have a day Tyler Dearden. The over-slot 29th round pick from 2017 has looked good for Lowell this summer, though this was his first real power display. The outfielder is now hitting .306/.378/.449 and should be a shoe-in for a full-season debut next year in his age-20 season.
GCL W 5-4 (F/10)
Juan Carlos Abreu, LF: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS
Brandon Howlett, 3B: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI
Carlos Pulido, 1B: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 K
Jonathan Diaz, C: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
Yoan Aybar: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Abreu continues to look good atop the GCL lineup, and Aybar continues to look good as a converted outfielder. The reliever now has a 2.95 ERA through 18 1⁄3 innings with 19 strikeouts and seven walks. The control isn’t great but that’s to be expected. There may be something here.
DSL 1 G1 L 0-3
Cristofe Tineo: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
DSL 1 G2 W 6-0
Ceddanne Rafaela: 4-4, 1 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 SB
Fabian Andrade, RF: 2-2, 1 BB, 1 RBI
Yoelvis Guedez: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
DSL 2 G1 W 7-6
Nelfy Abreu, CF: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K
Oscar Rangel, DH: 3-4, 1 R, 2 RBI
DSL 2 G2 L 4-12
Nelfy Abreu, CF: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 R, 2 K
Ronaldo Pulgar, 3B: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI
Oscar Rangel, DH: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI
Kleiber Rodriguez, C: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 R
Yulis Hernandez, 2B: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 E
Nice day for Rangel on the DSL 2 squad, and a big day for Rafaela on DSL 1. The latter has had a big year, though he’s cooled off a bit since a hot start. Still, this summer should be enough to get him Stateside for next season at the latest.
Player of the Day: It’s gotta be Denyi Reyes despite some other impressive days. The Greenville righty is almost expected to be this dominant at this point, and he’s proven just about all he can at that level.
