Red Sox at Tigers lineup: Commence Operation Score Runs for Chris Sale

It shouldn’t take many!

The suddenly anemic Red Sox (69-31) finish off a three-game set against the Tigers (42-58) this afternoon in Detroit (1:10 p.m., NESN), still looking to score their second freaking run after the All-Star break.

About today’s game: American League ERA leader Chris Sale (10-4, 2.23 ERA) starts for a Sox team that forgot its bats back at Fenway Park, but at least he’ll have MVP candidate J.D. Martinez back in the fold today after Saturday’s rest session. Detroit counters with lefty Blaine Hardy (3-2, 3.31 ERA), who’s taking the space of the recently DL’ed Michael Fulmer. Hardy has put up good numbers so far... except for that time Boston pounded him for five runs over six innings early last month. Let’s hope we see that again.

With Martinez back and the southpaw on the mound, Steve Pearce shifts to first base and the struggling Mitch Moreland gets the day off. Sandy León is back behind plate.

About last night’s game: The worst this incredible team has to offer, as it was stymied by Mike Fiers and the rest of the Detroit pitching staff in a listless 5-0 loss. Mookie made a great catch, but there was nothing else positive worth noting. If you’re not ready to turn the page, you can read Matt’s recap, but I’m moving on.

Forecast: It’s not looking great, as we’re looking at 68 degrees with a better than 50 percent chance of rain, but, given the Sox aren’t schedule to return to Detroit this year, I bet they do everything possible to sneak this one in.

Today’s reading: Sunday noneday.

A good tweet from the boss:
