Red Sox at Tigers lineup: Game 100 in your face

Brian Johnson takes the bump in the Motor City.

MLB: Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers
Let’s do it again, shall we?
Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The nice-as-hell Red Sox (69-30) look to wake up the bats against the similar sleepy Detroit Tigers (41-58) this afternoon at Comerica Park (6:10 p.m., NESN).

About today’s game: Brian Johnson (1-2, 4.20 ERA) goes for Boston, one day after David Price did the damn thing against a Detroit lineup that’s just struggling to stay afloat. The Tigers will counter with Mike Fiers (6-6, 3.70 ERA), a capable righty who’s more or less the dictionary definition of “fourth starter.”

For some godforsaken reason, J.D. Martinez is out of the starting lineup and is replaced at DH by Steve Pearce. Probably the All-Star whirlwind and stuff, and if so, expect Mookie Betts to have tomorrow off. Mook’s in there today, though, as is Blake Swihart, who’s catching and batting ninth.

About last night’s game: No one scored after a first-inning double by Steve Pearce, though the Red Sox certainly didn’t suffer from lack of chances. Price was electric, Matt Barnes was so good he was uncatchable and Craig Kimbrel slammed the door for the 1-0. Read Matt’s recap here.

Forecast: 75 degrees with a 25 percent chance of rain.

Today’s reading: A deep dive into how and why Pedro Martinez helped the enemy, New York’s Luis Severino, from Boston.com’s Mark Dunphy.
