Red Sox Minor Lines: Michael Chavis goes deep

It was a solid day on the farm.

Pawtucket W 7-3

Aneury Tavarez, RF: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 K

Tony Renda, 2B: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 R

Adam Lind, DH: 0-4, 1 K

Sam Travis, LF: 0-2, 1 R

Mike Miller, SS: 2-4, 1 K

Justin Haley: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 9 K (106 pitches)

Bobby Poyner: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K (26 pitches)

Ty Buttrey: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K (20 pitches)

The Red Sox have some rough position player depth right now, and after calling up Tzu-Wei Lin to replace the injured Rafael Devers, Sam Travis is the only position player left on the 40-man roster. Now, Lind and Brandon Phillips represent decent depth too, but if that’s what they’re hanging their hats on....yikes.

Portland W 5-4

Jeremy Rivera, SS: 2-5, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB

Danny Mars, RF: 2-5, 1 R, 2 K, 1 SB

Michael Chavis, 3B: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 K

Josh Ockimey, PH/1B: 1-1

Dedgar Jimenez: 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K (95 pitches)

Travis Lakins: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K (23 pitches)

Chavis has been struggling in his very brief time back at Double-A, but he did hit his first dinger with the SeaDogs on Thursday. Obviously, it’s too early to think much of anything about him at this point, but at least the power is still there. Lakins, meanwhile, continues to throw scoreless innings. I’m not sure how much longer they can keep him in Portland.

Salem L 5-6

Tyler Hill, RF/LF: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 R

Brett Netzer, 2B: 0-5, 1 K

Roldani Baldwin, DH: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI

Bobby Dalbec, 3B: 0-4, 1 BB, 3 K

Michael Osinski, 1B: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 K

Deiner Lopez, SS: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E

Tanner Houck: 6 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 4 K (86 pitches)

Joan Martinez: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K (18 pitches)

Houck pitched well for the majority of this game before starting to lose it towards the end. He also left the bases loaded for his bullpen with all three of those runs eventually coming in, which didn’t help the final line. They are letting him get back to his old college style, so we’ll see how that works out. Also, Baldwin returned to the lineup for the first time since June 22, so that’s neat.

Greenville SUSP

Lowell W 6-1

Jarren Duran, 2B: 2-3, 1 3B, 2 BB, 2 R, 1 CS

Cole Brannen, CF: 1-5, 1 R, 3 K

Brandon Phillips, DH: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 1 K

Trey Ganns, 1B: 2-5, 2 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI

Kole Cottam, C: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS

Eduard Bazardo: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K (76 pitches)

Bazardo had been pitching out of the bullpen for the last two years in the DSL and GCL, but he’s been in the rotation for Lowell and has been great for his first six starts. After this one, he has a 2.53 ERA over 32 innings of work with 37 strikeouts and just four walks. The scouting reports aren’t great, but the numbers are thus far.

DSL 1 L 0-5

Jesus Maita, RF: 1-2, 1 BB, 1 K

DSL 2 L 2-1

Nelfy Abreu, CF: 1-5, 1 2B, 2 K

Angel Maita, RF: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K

Luis Hernandez, 3B: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 E

Irvin Villarroel: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

It was not a great day down in the Dominican. Let’s just leave it at that.

Player of the Day: This was a good day on the farm but there really weren’t any true standout performances. I’m going to give this one to Eduard Bazardo and call it a day.
