Red Sox at Yankees lineup: Hold on to your butts

The battle for the best record in baseball starts tonight.

The Red Sox (25-9) visit the Bronx to face the second-place Yankees (24-10) tonight in what should be a spectacular three-game set for control of the American League (7:05 p.m., NESN, MLBN out-of-network). It’s the first time the two teams have faced each other with the best records in baseball since 2002. Read Matt’s series preview here.

About tonight’s game: Drew Pomeranz (1-1, 6.14 ERA) will look to pick up where he left off, overcoming a bad first inning his last time out to go six strong (and look competent) for the first time this year. He’ll be countered by Yankees ace Luis Severino (5-1, 2.11 ERA), who the Sox pounded last time they saw for 5 runs. He’s allowed 4 since over 3 starts. He’s good.

As you might expect, the A lineup is being rolled out for both squads. The headline of the post? Yeah. Those butts. Hold’em.

About the Tyler Austin beef: Will the Sox and Yanks fight again? I hope not, but Austin and Joe Kelly have finished serving their suspensions, tensions will be high and you have to figure someone on the Sox is getting plunked. My money’s on Andrew Benintendi or Rafael Devers, who are most similar to Austin in the seniority department and also the least likely dudes in the world to start a brawl.

Forecast: A nice night, 69 degrees or so at game time.
