The Red Sox (24-9) look to leave Globe Life Park in Arlington with their third straight win as they wrap up a four-game series with the Rangers (13-22) today in Texas (3:05 p.m., NESN).
About today’s game: Chris Sale (2-1, 2.14 ERA) will make his xxth start of the year against old friend Doug Fister (0-1, 2.88 ERA), who has caught on in North Texas to start the year.
Hanley Ramirez gets a day off, which bumps J.D. Martinez to third in the order and hot-hitting Mitch Moreland to cleanup. For the Rangers, Joey Gallo gets the day off for some reason, and I’m into it. Ronald Guzman — who has been traded eight times in my dynasty league in six months, somehow — starts at first.
About yesterday’s game: It was a doozy! Eduardo Rodriguez and Cole Hamels both pitched decently but got nicked here and there, making it 5-5 through seven innings, but Andrew Benintendi’s three-hit night (two of which were fluky, but hey) ended in a ninth-inning triple that would see him score to make it 6-5. Beyond that, Joe Kelly was a monster, Craig Kimbrel notched his 300th career save — he’s the fastest there, ever — and the Sox kept their one-game division lead. Read the recap here.
Forecast: Hot! Like 85 degrees and mostly sunny. This is good if your working theory on Sale’s velocity drop is that it has been cold.
Today’s reading: NBC Sports Boston’s Justin Leger has a good piece on how J.D. Martinez is even better than you think. Read it here.
A good tweet from yesterday:
This gave me an extra push into the Joe Kelly fan club.
