Offseason Pick 5 Results!

I held off on this for an extra week, but the results ended up being the same.

MLB: Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays
If you chose these two players, congrats, you won. If you didn’t, better luck next year.
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Back in November, I continued the annual tradition of the Pick 5 challenge in which we try to predict offseason additions to the Red Sox roster. And today, I continue the annual tradition of sharing the results of said challenge.

Before I continue, I am going to remind you of the base ground rules (there are more detail in the link above):

  • You could not pick a player that was under team control for the upcoming season. Kind of unfair if I let you pick Chris Sale, Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, Rafael Devers, and David Price.
  • First come, first served. If you picked the same combination of names as someone else, your results would not count.
  • Order of names did not matter this year. Maybe next year, they will.
  • Winner would be the user who chose the new additions with the highest salary for the 2018 season (in the post above, I mistakenly said 2017, as I was still in the process of adjusting to the idea of 2018 as a year).

Below, I will list every player chosen by an OTM member, and their destination for the 2018 season, if applicable. At the top of the list will be players who signed with or were traded to Boston. If you want to skip to the results, press ctrl+f, and search for “Official Pick 5 Results” (without the quotation marks).

J.D. Martinez - Red Sox (23.75 MM)

Eduardo Nunez - Red Sox (6 MM)

MLB: Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox
Eduardo Nunez signing with Boston made at least 7 people really happy.

Fun Facts

  • Not a single person chose Mitch Moreland. If they had chosen him and J.D. Martinez, they would have been the sole winner.
MLB: New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox
I doubt much of anyone will lose sleep, but Martinez+Moreland would have been enough to get the win for one person.
Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports
  • 27 people picked J.D. Martinez.
  • 15 people picked Eduardo Nunez.
  • We had a total of 41 entries, so we had about as many correct picks as we did entrants, which is probably the worst we’ve ever done.
  • 7 people picked both J.D. Martinez and Eduardo Nunez unless I made an error (which is possible, I’m very tired).

Official Pick 5 Results

Chelista625, Bogey2Short, SirBenjaminPK, Ricochet!, crossedsabres8, REDSOXFAN1973, and timtime321 are all “winners” this year, since 2 picks was enough to win, and they all had the exact same two guys to sign, which is why in future years I’m going to make a secondary tie-breaker the order in which the players are listed.

Here are the winners picks:

Chelista625 - J.D. Martinez, Jed Lowrie, Eric Hosmer, Tony Watson, Eduardo Nunez

Bogey2Short - Giancarlo Stanton, J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer, Carlos Santana, Eduardo Nunez

SirBenjaminPK - Eric Hosmer, Eduardo Nunez, Giancarlo Stanton, Addison Reed, J.D. Martinez

Ricochet! - Eric Hosmer, Eduardo Nunez, J.D. Martinez, Addison Reed, Shohei Ohtani

crossedsabres - J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer, Eduardo Nunez, Giancarlo Stanton, Doug Fister

REDSOXFAN1973 - Giancarlo Stanton, Eduardo Nunez, Carlos Santana, Addison Reed, J.D. Martinez

timtime321 - J.D. Martinez, Steve Cishek, Lucas Duda, Howie Kendrick, Eduardo Nunez

Conclusion and Pick 5 History

So, it goes without saying, but we more or less suck at this game. Last year we had our first tie, and this year, we had 7 winners, which is honestly just too many winners. On the plus side, the winners all got 2 right, which reverses last year’s showing.

MLB: New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox
We’re all winners with J.D. in Boston.
