Joe Kelly suspended six games for brawl

Tyler Austin got five.

MLB: New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

Wednesday’s donnybrook at Fenway was a mess, and we all knew there were going to be suspensions coming out of this. Major League Baseball obviously doesn’t want this happening. (Note: They love this and are promoting it on their social media accounts, which is hypocritical but I don’t blame them because I’m promoting it too!) Anyway, the suspensions have been announced, and only Joe Kelly and Tyler Austin are going to miss any games because of all this. Kelly got a six-game suspension from the league.

Austin, meanwhile, got five games, and honestly that might be a harsher penalty as a position player compared to a reliever. Of course, neither gets paid for their time out so Kelly loses more money. Plus, the Red Sox will be down a roster spot for an extra day. Either way, both players are appealing their suspensions and will be available for Thursday night’s series finale.

While these were the only suspensions, there were a few other punishments doled out. Xander Bogaerts, Dustin Pedroia, Marco Hernandez and C.C. Sabathia all got fines for entering the field of play while being on the disabled list, and Alex Cora and Phil Nevin all got fines too. Fun stuff!
