Red Sox Minor Lines: Carson Smith’s first rehab outing could have gone better

But he made it through pain-free.

Pawtucket L 1-3

Tzu-Wei Lin: 1-4

Sam Travis: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K

Rusney Castillo: 0-4

Bryce Brentz: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K

Deven Marrero: 0-3, 2 K

Brian Johnson: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Chandler Shepherd: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Kyle Martin: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Johnson, if you recall, was recently placed on the shelf with shoulder soreness as soon as David Price was placed on the disabled list and a rotation spot opened on the major-league roster. It was bad timing for the lefty, but fortunately the injury didn’t last long and he’s back in action now. Johnson looked good in his first start back and if Doug Fister falters in his next couple outings don’t be surprised if Johnson gets the call back up.

Portland L 7-13

Danny Mars: 4-5, 1 HR, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB

Michael Chavis: 1-3, 1 RBI

Josh Ockimey: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 BB, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K

Carson Smith: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 0 K

Trey Ball: 4 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 3 K

Trevor Kelley: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K

So, that wasn’t the best outing for Smith, who started his long-anticipated rehab assignment on Saturday. He walked the first three batters he faced, and his velocity was a couple ticks below where it was the last time he was in the majors. All that being said, he came out of the outing healthy and that’s a very good thing. Tommy John rehab is a long, uneven process. Smith was never going to be great in his first outing, and he’ll try to do a little better on Tuesday in Pawtucket. Meanwhile, another really rough day for Ball and another Double-A home run for Ockimey.

Salem L 3-4

Tate Matheny: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 SB, 1 CS

Austin Rei: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 RBI

The lower minors in the Red Sox system is filled with outfielders who are major threats on the bases, and Matheny is one of them. He only stole 50 percent of his attempted bases on Saturday, but that gave him 23 stolen bases on the year in 29 tries.

Greenville L 4-12

Lorenzo Cedrola: 2-5, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K

Tyler Hill: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 RBI, 1 SB

Bobby Dalbec: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 K

Brett Netzer: 0-5, 3 K

Bryan Mata: 3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 1 K

Tucker Tubbs: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Mata has been outstanding this season and has turned into one of the most exciting prospects in the whole system, but he may be hitting a wall right now. This is now the third time in four starts he’s failed to make it through four innings and the first time he hasn’t recorded more than one strikeout. Of course, we’re talking about an 18-year-old who’s making the jump to full-season ball from the DSL, so some fatigue should be expected.

Lowell W 3-2

Michael Osinski: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K

Zach Sterry: 2-4, 1 RBI

GCL Red Sox L 4-12

Cole Brannen: 1-5, 1 K

Blake Swihart (DH): 0-5, 2 K

Pedro Castellanos: 2-4, 2 R

DSL Red Sox L 0-6

Willis Figueroa: 2-4
