Red Sox Minor Lines: Trey Ball impresses in Portland

What a day for Trey Ball.

Pawtucket L 5-6 (F/14)

Rusney Castillo: 1-4

Tzu-Wei Lin: 2-6, 1 R

Bryce Brentz: 1-7, 1 R, 3 K

Blake Swihart (1B): 0-5, 1 BB, 1 K

Deven Marrero: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K

Roenis Elias: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K

Chandler Shepherd: 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

In yesterday’s post about September call-ups, I neglected to mention Elias, which was a mistake. The lefty was taken off the 60-day disabled list yesterday, taking Noe Ramirez’ spot on the 40-man roster. He’s still starting down in Pawtucket, but once their season is over I’d expect him to come up and help out as a multi-inning lefty out of the bullpen.

Portland W 2-0

Danny Mars: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K

Michael Chavis: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K

Josh Ockimey: 0-4

Trey Ball: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K

Jake Cosart: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Well then. Hello there Mr. Ball. One of the most disappointing draft picks in recent Red Sox history, Ball has continued to struggle for most of 2017 but he’s actually been pretty solid of late. This start was spectacular, and while I wouldn’t get too excited about it I think it’s worth thinking about him in the bullpen more than thinking about converting him back to the outfield.

Salem W 1-0

Tate Matheny: 1-3, 1 2B

Austin Rei: 1-3, 2 K

Logan Boyd: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Austin Glorius: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Another strong start for Boyd in his fifth outing with Salem. After being promoted to High-A, the lefty has allowed two or fewer runs in four of his five outings. The longterm outlook for Boyd still isn’t anything too special, but it’s hard to deny his recent performance.

Greenville L 2-7

Brett Netzer: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 R, 1 K

Roldani Baldwin: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI

Bobby Dalbec: 1-4, 2 K, 1 E

Jason Groome: 4 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 7 K

On the surface, this was a rough day for Groome, allowing a run for every inning he pitched. Of course, you can never judge a minor-league line by its cover. The seven strikeouts to two walks is certainly encouraging, and at the very least shows that the young southpaw’s stuff was crisp. That’s good enough for me.

Lowell L 2-3

Michael Osinski: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K

Zach Sterry: 0-4, 3 K

GCL Red Sox L 8-12

Cole Brannen: 2-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K

Tyler Esplin: 3-4, 1 BB, 2 R, 1 K

Pedro Castellanos: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI
